Purpose:

The tradition of the the Shōryō-e and the Tennōji Gakuso, established by Prince Shōtoku, has been inherited by the private Gagaku group "Garyōkai," which was founded in 1884. This year marks the 140th anniversary of the establishment of Garyōkai. To commemorate this milestone, we aim to showcase how the Tennōji Bugaku has been authentically preserved by Garyōkai through various decisions and innovations, to the point of being designated a cultural heritage, ingrained in the local culture of Osaka. We plan to introduce this journey through the narrative art of Rōkyoku performed by Keiko Haruno.

Together with Haruno Keiko's Rōkyoku (Naniwa-bushi), we will present the 140-year history of Garyōkai by performing key pieces of Tennōji Bugaku that marked significant historical moments. Additionally, we will explore creative endeavors such as a session combining Rakugo and Rōkyoku, as well as a musical collaboration between Rōkyoku and Gagaku.

Program:

Part 1: The Resounding Music of Shōin-ki
- Rōkyoku: "Shōin-ki Yohō"
- Kangen (instrumental music): Banshiki Chō scale "Hakuchū"
- Bugaku (court dance): "Hokuteiraku"

Part 2: Naniwa's Bugaku Spreading Across the World
- Rakugo & Rōkyoku: 140 Years of Garyōkai
- Bugaku: "Genjōraku"
- Bugaku: "Bairo"
- Rōkyoku: "Chōgeishi"
